Bernie Sanders uses words of Pope Francis to rip 'bigoted' Donald Trump rhetoric on immigrants

While GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump was holding a rally in Phoenix -- that was delayed by protesters blocking the roads -- Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders was meeting immigrants near the border in Nogales, where he blasted Trump by using the words of Pope Francis.

“As I have traveled around this country and talked to immigrant families, and particularly Latino immigrant families, I am struck by the fear and sadness that grips so many of them,” Sanders said. “I have seen the sadness of families torn apart. That is why I am here today.We don’t need a wall or barbed wire, we need to fix our broken criminal justice system.”

Sander sthen laid into Trump who continues to call for a massive wall to be built separating the U.S. from Mexico.

"I would hope that all of us are rightly appalled by divisive, bigoted and xenophobic comments of people like Donald Trump," Sanders said."To insult a nation is not befitting of anybody, let alone a candidate of the U.S. presidency."

The Vermont senator then used the words of Pope Francis, saying, "the solution is compassion not hatred. Good public policy, not bigotry."
