Bernie Sanders will lay off half of his campaign staff: New York Times

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) will lay off 50 percent of his campaign staff, the New York Times reported on Tuesday night, citing campaign sources.

The report came shortly after Sanders lost the New Jersey Democratic primary to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Clinton has reportedly amassed enough delegates to be the party's presumptive nominee, though the senator has stated that he will continue campaigning until the Democratic National Convention in July.

According to the Times, most of the staff members being released are advance workers and field staffers. However, some members of the campaign could gain jobs in Sanders' Senate office.

Sanders, who has spent most of the past two weeks campaigning in California, will reportedly travel back to Vermont on Wednesday, but will then head to the District of Columbia, where the final primary contest will be held on June 14.
