Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made an election stop today at the House chamber before a joint meeting of the US Congress, less a few dozen Democratic lawmakers who boycotted his stump speech.
But those who showed up were in for a rollicking good time as the prime minister made his case opposing President Obama's proposed deal with Iran to contain its nuclear power ambitions.
Netanyahu thanked Obama for the ways he's backed Israel, and he said that much of the president's support may never be known. "But I know it, and I will always be grateful to President Obama for that support," Netanyahu said.
But then he got to his main point, that Iran's nuclear threat was just the latest example of a desire to destroy the Jewish people. Netanyahu warned that even if an agreement to curb Iran's nuclear programs were put into place, Iran could still end up with nuclear weapons on a short time scale.
"This deal wouldn't be a farewell to arms, it would be a farewell to arms control," he said.
He wrapped up his speech with language about Israel not bowing down to threats to its existence. "The days when the Jewish people remain passive in the face of genocidal enemies, those days are over," he said.
