'No basis': Impeachment lawyer warns GOPers they're headed for a 'very uncomfortable vote'

For an impeachment, some indication of wrongdoing is necessary, said former impeachment lawyer and longtime legal analyst Norm Eisen on CNN Tuesday.
And, he said, in the case of the House Republicans considering an impeachment of President Joe Biden, they don't have it.
Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) continues to hold back a vote on the impeachment of President Joe Biden because the votes simply aren't there, said Eisen.
"The biggest issue with this impeachment inquiry is that after years of looking, including an intense investigation since the Republicans took over the House of Representatives, there is no evidence of Joe Biden engaging in any financial or other impropriety that would give rise to an impeachment or even an impeachment inquiry," said Eisen.
"The Republicans are making claims about Biden's involvement in pressing for the ouster of a corrupt prosecutor in Ukraine. But we looked at that in the first Trump impeachment, and there is no there there."
He mentioned the recent smoking guns Republicans claimed they had that proved Biden was getting money from China from his son. It turned out to be Biden's son paying his father back for a truck payment.
"There is simply no connection of Joe Biden's wrongdoing, and so therefore no basis for the impeachment or even an inquiry," said Eisen.
CNN host Sara Sidner said that Republican House members have said that the reason they need an impeachment is to be able to do a more invasive investigation. Eisen explained that isn't how that works.

"The nature of impeachment is that you have to have some predicate, some indication of wrongdoing to even have an inquiry, and that is the reason that Kevin McCarthy was not able to put an inquiry on the floor for a vote," said the legal expert.
"He simply declared they were going to have an inquiry, and I think, that, in particular, for those 17 members of the House of Representatives from districts that voted for Joe Biden, this is a very uncomfortable vote."
Some political analysts have suggested that the Biden impeachment is motivated by revenge concerning Donald Trump.
