‘Cult much?’ MAGA lawmaker ridiculed on House floor for pro-Trump poster

As the House opened debate Wednesday on President Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act, the budget reconciliation package full of cuts to taxes and social safety net programs, one Democratic lawmaker ridiculed a MAGA colleague for delivering an overtly pro-Trump speech and bringing a large Trump-themed poster to the House floor.
“Ladies and gentlemen, this is a time for choosing,” said Rep. Mark Alford (R-MO), speaking in support of Trump’s bill while standing beside a large poster depicting Trump in front of fireworks and an American flag.
“We can choose to side with the illegal aliens, unelected bureaucrats, and fear mongering from the American left, or, we can choose to side with the American people and deliver on the mandate that they gave us back in November. I urge my colleagues to put America first, support the rule and pass the One Big Beautiful Bill!”
In response, Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA), ripped into Alford for his excessive praise of Trump, and cast doubt on his sincerity.
“Cult much?” McGovern said. “You know, that gentleman’s poster says it all, it’s not about American families, it’s about one big party for Trump, it’s about swelling up his ego.”
Estimated to cost $4.2 trillion over ten years, Trump’s bill would make permanent a number of corporate tax cuts implemented during his first presidency, tax cuts that largely benefit the wealthiest Americans, while at the same time, slash funding for Medicaid and food stamps. In its latest version, the bill is also projected to add $2.4 trillion to the national debt over ten years.
Scanning the room, McGovern took a jab at Republicans for the discrepancy between the number of House Democrats on the floor speaking against the bill, and Republicans speaking in favor of it.
“In Congress, we can measure how much people really believe in their position by whether they’re willing to come and join their leaders on the House floor,” he said. “Well, I count four members on the Republican side, and we’ve got over 75 over here. But if I were them, I wouldn’t want to be associated with this bill either.”
