More than 17 hours after the hearing started, the House Ways and Means Committee advanced their portion of President Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful bill.”
On X and Bluesky, reporters and congressional aides were grateful their all-nighter came to an end.
“Haven't done a lot of all-nighters since college, did do one to complete a 24-hour marathon of Kurt Russell movies. Was not really comparable to a tax markup,” an aide to Congressman Don Beyer (R-VA), Aaron Fritschner, said.
Semafor reporter Eleanor Mueller posted, "After 17 hours, House Ways and Means Committee just voted 26-19 along party lines to advance its portion of the tax bill to House Budget Committee. JCT’s Barthold gets a standing ovation from members afterward as Smith shouts him out for ‘staying through this entire hearing.’”
Senior Director of Federal Budget Policy Brendan Duke noted an exchange between Congressmen Beyer and Rudy Yakym (R-IN), "Yakym: ‘So just to be very clear, when you had the House, the Senate, and the presidency, you were not able to get that through?’ Beyer: ‘Are you trying to foreshadow what’s going to happen with this bill in the Senate?’”

Reporter Mychael Schnell had a lengthy post, which in part said, “Republicans on the House Ways and Means Committee just rejected a Beyer amendment to close the carried interest loophole, which Trump wanted to include in the bill, but it didn’t make it in. During the debate, Yakym asked Beyer about closing the carried interest loophole, not making.”
Schnell later posted, "News: House Ways & Means Committee advanced the tax portion of the GOP's 'big, beautiful bill' after a marathon, overnight markup. Party-line 26-19 vote. Markup began at 2:30 pm yesterday, ended at 8 am today. BUT — there's still no SALT deal.”
On Bluesky Zach C. Cohen said, "Breaking: The House Ways and Means Committee just approved trillions in new tax cuts for corporations, households, and small businesses on a party-line vote after a marathon overnight session in which Democrats assailed the bill as a gift to the wealthy.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) is looking to have the whole bill pass the chamber by Memorial Day.
