The chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee pushed back at one of his GOP colleagues as she attempted to incorporate him into her conspiracy theory about the firing of the CDC’s Dr. Susan Monarez.
Given time to question the former CDC director who was fired by HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., GOP Sen. Ashley Moody, who was appointed to the seat previously occupied by Marco Rubio, instead used the majority of her time asking who Monarez’s lawyers are as she attempted to paint an anti-Donald Trump conspiracy.
Moody repeatedly asked the doctor who her lawyers are and when she hired them..
During Moody’s attack, she also pointed out that Monarez approached the committee chair, Sen. Bill Cassidy, after she was fired, which brought a stern response from the Louisiana Republican.
“I just want to make a brief comment as my name was invoked as the chairman of the committee with jurisdiction over the CDC that favorably reported Dr. Monarez as the CDC director,” he began. “It is entirely appropriate for someone with oversight concerns to contact my office or me or, frankly, any of us.”
“Upon receiving outreach from Dr. Monarez, I contacted both the secretary and the White House to inquire what was happening and to express concerns about what was alleged. As soon as the director was fired, the HELP committee began reviewing the situation as it is our responsibility and any and all communications with the witnesses was conducted by health staff in coordination with attorneys,” he added.
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) joined the pile-on, adding, “Very briefly, I find that rather astounding that anyone is concerned that government heads of agencies talk to the elected officials of the United States of America. That is what they are supposed to do.”
