Real Time host Bill Maher opened the show on Friday by recapping the continuing spat between Donald Trump and Fox News and observing that Trump maintains his lead in the Republican 2016 candidate field despite a host of remarks people predicted would doom his campaign.
"He's like Godzilla -- everything they throw at the monster makes him stronger," he said.
The conservative network initially defended host Megyn Kelly after Trump criticized her line of questioning during the Aug. 6 candidate debate, Maher explained, until Fox executives saw the ratings. The host also noted that Trump recently announced that he had a plan to defeat the Islamic State terrorist group.
"I would laugh, except his plan to defeat Fox News worked," he quipped.
On Friday, Maher said, Trump made his way to the Iowa State Fair, where he originally offered to give young attendees helicopter rides. Fair organizers later refused to allow him to do so.
"How do you compete with that, as a candidate?" Maher asked. "Chris Christie tried -- he offered to be the bouncy house."
