Black GOP ex-lawmaker slams Trump: ‘You can't be a constitutionalist and ignore the Constitution'

Former Oklahoma congressman J.C. Watts won't be endorsing Donald Trump anytime soon. Despite his home state's governor cozying up to Trump , Watts is not a fan.

"I just don’t feel like Trump is speaking to me — as a believer, as an African-American, as a conservative,'' Watts said in an interview, according to NewsOK. "Whatever category you want to put me in, I don’t feel like he’s speaking to me."

"What he’s said about blacks, Hispanics. women, Muslims — you can't be a constitutionalist and ignore the Constitution," Watts said.

The 58-year-old served in the U.S. Congress from 1995 to 2003, often as one of the only black Republicans in the House. He explained that he's concerned for the drag that Trump causes on the ticket for other Republicans running for the House or Senate.

"Whatever you think about Donald Trump, Democrats are going to make every Republican candidate wear him,'' Watts said.

He echoed the populist anger that many Oklahomans feel that both Trump and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), who won the Oklahoma primary, seemed to have captured. "But I don’t agree with how we exercise our anger – 'punch him in the mouth and I’ll pay the legal bill.' Are we encouraging total disregard for civility?"

Watts currently serves as the president and CEO of the international charity Feed the Children.
