Black GOP operative: 'Depressing' Trump 'has sent the party back to the Stone Age — it’s that bad'

Donald Trump's outreach to black voters has consisted of telling them that they have poor, miserable lives -- and thus have "nothing to lose" by voting for him.

If you think this particular message has been crafted by clever GOP operatives as a heretofore unknown secret formula for winning over black voters, think again -- it turns out that Republicans who specialize in minority outreach find it just as deplorable as you do.

The New York Times has interviewed several black and Hispanic Republicans who lament the way Trump's campaign has torpedoed their years of work making the GOP more palatable to minority voters. Of particular interest is Charles Badger, who was in charge of black voter outreach for Jeb Bush's presidential campaign.

"If I were to sum it up in one word, the word is depressing," he told the Times when asked how it felt to be a minority leader in the party right now. "[Trump] has sent the party back to, I don’t know, the Stone Age — it’s that bad."

Longtime Republican Ron Christie, who has been a Republican staffer for various GOP politicians since 1991, was even more blunt.

"The Republican Party that I started off with in 1991 died when Donald Trump received the nomination," he told the Times.
