MSNBC host fact-checks Georgia Republican Brad Raffensperger to his face

MSNBC host Ayman Mohyeldin confronted Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensberger (R), who is desperately trying to dig himself out of the political hole after he refused to overturn the 2020 election for Donald Trump.

Raffensberger, who has been promoting his book on cable news for the past several weeks, attempted to blame "both sides" for lies about the election, citing former gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams, who launched several lawsuits after questionable issues in the 2018 elections.

"What I do accept is that both of them, though, what they've done is really tried to undermine the legitimacy of the election process," claimed Raffensberger.

"That point of distinction, if I can sir," began Mohyeldin. "You do acknowledge she is not asking to overturn the results of an election. You do acknowledge that, right? She is not asking to overturn the results of an election."

"Well, what she said in her statement she played was not based on anything that could be supported by facts," Raffensberger fumbled. "What she hit us with was nine lawsuits and we won every single one of them. They weren't supported by the facts. Just like with President Trump. His team had lawsuits and none was fact-based. So, it got kicked out in a court of law. We prevailed in every single case. What it does is it destabilizes and really destroys voters' trust in the election process and that is not helpful for America."

That's where Mohyeldin introduced his fact-check.

"Sorry. So the 'exact match' lawsuit Stacey Abrams has filed is still working its way through the courts, no?" asked Mohyeldin.

"No. What is working through the courts right now is actually going back to the old dr machines," claimed Raffensberger.

"Right, but her argument about claims in Georgia have still, and are still working their way through a legal proceeding in Georgia," Mohyeldin corrected. "They are not resolved. Let me put this on the screen to show you. If you look at what Donald Trump did on the day of his challenge to the results in Georgia, they were dismissed the very next day is that correct?"

Raffensberger agreed.

"When you look at what Stacey Abrams did, again, some things she was arguing for in the state of Georgia actually worked their way through legal proceedings which I think you would concede is a normal process in elections," the host explained as his distinction for a valid argument compared to Trump's legal conspiracy theories. "If you have a complaint you have the legitimate right to pursue those challenges in legal courts is that not correct?"

Raffensberger rambled off the process of signature matches, dodging the question.

"So it is something the courts essentially agreed with, with Stacey Abrams that that was something that could have been done better," Mohyeldin said.

"Well, we're always looking at how to improve the process," the Republican dodged again.

"Right. But you're making a moral equivalency between Donald Trump and Stacey Abrams and I am saying is that not part of the problem that you are trying to equate somebody who tried to overturn an election with somebody who is trying to improve an election? And I just am surprised you can't see the similarities, sorry, the differences between the two arguments. You think they are one and the same."
