'I would have concerns': GOP governor dodges question about voting for a convicted Trump
February 05, 2024
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp on Monday dodged when asked by CNN's Phil Mattingly about whether he would still back former President Donald Trump were he convicted of a felony.
After Mattingly noted that Kemp had said he would support Trump were he the GOP nominee, the CNN host asked him whether a felony conviction would change his thinking on the matter.
"We'll see what happens with all the court cases that are going on," Kemp replied. "I think polling shows that if he is, indeed, convicted, there could potentially be real problems with his ability to win. As you know, everyone in this country is innocent until proven guilty."
Mattingly then pressed Kemp for his own personal views, not the views that voters had expressed to pollsters.

"Well, I think I would definitely have concerns about voting for someone that has been convicted," Kemp said. "Now, let me be clear too, I think a lot of these things have been politically motivated. We have to let the process play out. I wouldn't want to speculate, you know, on one potential case over another."
Kemp and Trump have clashed in the past, as Trump launched an unsuccessful primary campaign to unseat him in 2022 after Kemp refused Trump's requests to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in his state.
