'Hate was a motivator' against 3 Palestinian students shot: Advocacy group says
While there are few details available, groups are already saying that the shooting in Burlington, Vermont, had to do with racism.
The three students were on their way to dinner together while they were home for the Thanksgiving break. They were all wearing Palestinian scarves, symbols of the Keffiyeh. The students all attend American schools, Trinity University, Haverford College and Brown University.
Despite all three being shot, only one is in critical condition at the University of Vermont Medical Center, said NBC News reporter Emma Barnett.
While police haven't revealed any details, a statement from the Arab American Discrimination Committee president, Abed Ayoub, said, "It's clear that the hate was a motivating factor in this shooting." He went on to call for law enforcement to investigate it as a hate crime.
Meanwhile, the Council of American Islamic Relations is offering a $10,000 reward for information on the shooting.
In a statement, Brown University said one victim is junior Hisham Awartani. He is still hospitalized but is expected to survive the attack, CNN's Jake Tapper posted on social media. The family permitted the school to share “that Hisham is Palestinian Irish American, and that he and his two friends may have been targeted because of their Arab ancestry and identity.”
