Cambridge Analytica might have broken federal law when working for Trump in 2016

According to an information request by two House Democrats, data firm Cambridge Analytica may have broken American law when working for the Trump presidential campaign in 2016.

Reporting on the request sent by Reps. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) and Jerrod Nadler (D-NY), two leading Democrats in the House, Axios noted the crux of their statement hinges on whether British Cambridge Analytica employees worked for the Trump campaign — an act that would violate laws barring foreign nations from working for American candidates.

In their letter, which was addressed to Cambridge Analytica's acting CEO, the congressmen cited a Sunday Washington Post report that claimed the company "assigned dozens of non-U.S. citizens to provide campaign strategy and messaging advice to Republican candidates in 2014."

Axios noted that Cummings and Nadler both requested documents that would prove "the legality of Cambridge Analytica's work" in the United States.
