Officials fear MAGA riot anniversary could endanger Capitol staff and police: report

On Thursday, POLITICO reported that officials are concerned for the safety of Capitol staff and police as the Senate prepares to remain in Washington on the first anniversary of the January 6 insurrection.

"Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is keeping the Senate in session on the anniversary of the Jan. 6 attack, while the House will be out," said the report. "It's a complex choice, one that Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) told POLITICO she raised concerns about at a GOP conference lunch last week."

"I talk to the police officers a lot ... I don't think any of them are anxious to have to protect us, to be here on Jan. 6 when we don't need to be," said Murkowski. "This is not so much about us, the members of Congress, as it is the hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of people who support us every day, who really are anxious about being here on Jan. 6. Should we not respect their views?"

According to the report, other senators are not as concerned, with Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) saying, "I have confidence we recognize the sensitivity ... It's got to be dealt with in a way that is mindful of those emotions." Schumer himself has not responded to requests for comment.

The Capitol attack left dozens of police officers injured, and four died or committed suicide in the aftermath. Over 700 people have now been charged for their involvement.
