'This is a charade': Dem lawmaker hammers 'paranoid president' Trump's farcical attacks on FBI 'spying'

Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA) on Thursday dropped a hammer on President Donald Trump's latest attempt to undermine the credibility of special counsel Robert Mueller's probe.

Speaking with CNN's Alisyn Camerota, Speier ripped the president for trying to have a Republicans-only briefing on an FBI informant who talked with members of his 2016 presidential campaign as part of the agency's probe into Russian interference with the election.

"This is a charade," she said. "This is a paranoid president who is calling the shots, who believes that he will get more traction, he will be able to undermine the Mueller investigation by identifying this as 'Spygate.'"

Speier then pointed out that there was ample reason for the FBI to investigate Trump's campaign, as multiple people within it met directly with Russian agents to discuss leaking damaging information on Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.

"In fact, any other rational person would recognize that if four persons highly placed within their campaign were being recruited by the Russians, you would think that the candidate would want the FBI to be investigating this because we do not want Russia calling the shots in our country," she said.

Speier then theorized that the controversy over the FBI informant was simply the latest shiny object the president was using to discredit investigations into his actions, and she cited the past ginned-up controversies over "unmasking" and his evidence-free conspiracy theories about former President Barack Obama wiretapping Trump Tower as examples.

"He is paranoid," she said. "And he shows it over and over again."
