MSNBC contributor Charlie Sykes on Tuesday dismissed out of hand defeated Utah Republican Mia Love's attack on President Trump during her concession, saying Republicans would be better served by standing up to the president before they lose. Love, the first African American woman Republican elected to Congress, was publicly shamed by the president after losing her seat in the 2018 mid-terms.
"She's an extraordinarily gracious, intelligent, and talented woman and really could have been the future of the Republican Party," Sykes said, slamming Trump's "graceless, crude, and crass" statement. But Sykes added that her response amounted to too little, too late.
"My only quibble here with what Mia Love had to say was she said 'now that I'm not elected, I'm unshackled, I can say what I think,'" he said. "I think it would be better for other Republicans to not wait until they've lost an election to speak out about what they see and what they know."
"I'm glad she's speaking out about this," Sykes added. "It's a huge loss for the Republican Party, but I wish elected representatives would do what she's doing now."
