A Tennessee attorney, who previously ran for a position on the local school board, is being held in jail on $15 million bail after attempting to hire an undercover investigator to murder his wife, according to WREG.
Fred Auston Wortman III, 39, of Collierville was taken into custody after the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation received a tip that led to a meeting with an undercover officer.
According to authorities, Wortman met with the agent and provided personal details about his wife before handing over a down payment for the murder.
He was then taken into custody and charged with one count of solicitation of first-degree murder.
Following his arrest, his professional profile was taken offline, however WREG reports that Wortman listed himself as a "Christian" father of three children who also was a former player on the University of Tennessee’s National Championship Football team.
In 2013 , Wortman ran for a school board position in Collierville, saying, “What drew me to this school board position was I have three children, so I have a long term investment in the Collierville schools.
