Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) took the surprising step of agreeing with far-right Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) after she blasted her own party for failing to deal with rising health care costs.
During a Tuesday speech on the Senate floor, Schumer noted that President Donald Trump unexpectedly claimed to be negotiating with Democrats about health care on Monday amid a dispute that triggered a government shutdown.
"He now clearly knows that he has to show the American people at least some fig leaf of caring," Schumer said. "So he said he's talking with Democrats on the health care issue. Only one problem. It's not true."
The senator argued that Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) had been a "massive roadblock to progress" by recessing the House of Representatives instead of engaging in negotiations.
"Yesterday, he even said, quote, there's nothing to negotiate," he explained. "That proves beyond a doubt that Speaker Johnson is causing and not interested in ending the shutdown."
"But there's also a growing number of House Republicans who realize something needs to be done to fix this mess," he continued. "Marjorie Taylor Greene, one of the hardest right MAGA's loyalists, broke with the speaker and said we need to fix these [Affordable Care Act] tax credits."
In a post on Monday, Greene revealed that health insurance costs were expected to double for her family.
"So hold on to your hats," Schumer remarked. "I think this is the first time I've said this. But on this issue, Representative Greene said it perfectly. Representative Greene is absolutely right. Republicans can't sit by and do nothing while American families pay thousands more out of pocket for health care."
"Democrats stand ready and willing to negotiate," he added. "We urge Donald Trump and congressional Republicans to do the same."
