'Let's get real': Ex-prosecutor says classified documents case based on undisputable facts
Former Justice Department prosecutor Andrew Weissmann and fellow NYU law school professor Melissa Murray penned a new explainer for the Donald Trump charging documents and details about the four cases he faces.
Speaking to "Pod Save America," Murray explained that, as she dived deeper into Trump's "alleged criming," what stood out is "this is a vast tableau that, taken together, shows Donald Trump, allegedly, committing crimes before, during and after his presidency. And I don't think the enormity of the scale of the alleged criminality had really hit us in that way."
"Before he was president, during his presidency and then after he was president, retaining the documents unlawfully. Allegedly," Murray was careful to preface.
Co-host Jon Lovett said that any prosecutors who have spent time around Trump cases, even though they are normally reserved, somehow have a kind of "moral indignation" about facts shared by "people who have made the law their life."
Weissmann began by explaining "the Florida case" involving storage of classified documents.
"I note that Melissa correctly says 'alleged,' but this is one where, you know, let's get real," he said. "They were found there. So, this is not a complicated case."
Further, Trump admitted he had the documents, and his defense is that he was entitled to them and shouldn't be prosecuted for having them.

For those who deal with highly classified documents, "the idea that someone would put those in a location intentionally that is not secure given how important they are to our national security, is really hard to fathom," he continued.
"It's the kind of thing that when you see those documents, you wish — when I have — I wish I hadn't seen them. I was so concerned about whether I would inadvertently reveal anything that was in them."
He said it is easier for people to understand the 2020 election and the Jan. 6 case because "until Donald Trump, it was commonplace to have a peaceful transfer of power. That's what separates us from an autocracy."
