CNN's Jake Tapper: Congress treats Trump 'like a child' who pitches a fit so often 'you just ignore them'

CNN’s Jake Tapper on Monday compared Donald Trump’s weekend Twitter tantrum—and Congress’ lack of response to the president’s outburst—to a child you’re “used to pitching a fit,” and thus, largely ignore.

Tapper was reporting on the Trump’s weekend-long Twitter rampage, during with the president lashed out “on everything from Amazon dot com to his own Department of Justice,” which he called “an embarrassment.” Tapper described Trump’s weekend tweets as “full of rage and grievance, not always hewing to acts.

The CNN host pointed out that Trump met with “luminaries such as Fox News host Sean Hannity and Don King” over the weekend at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida.

“Over the weekend, the president meeting with individuals such as Don King, Judge Jeanine Pirro, Sean Hannity from Fox News,” Tapper explained. “Then he comes forward with all these tweets suggesting he has returned to his previous position on undocumented immigrants. This is what you get when you have this unofficial kitchen cabinet, I guess.”

“I'm old enough to remember when the rapper and musician Common came to the White House,” Tapper later added. “That was a big scandal because he had controversial lyrics."

“President Trump meets with Don King, who has literally killed two people. He did time for stomping to death a former assistant who owed him $600 and we don't blink an eye in this new era that [King’s] at Mar-a-Lago.”

“It is a remarkable place,” Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol replied. “Like something out of a bad novel, various low-lifes and people have made money the dubious ways. Social climbers and grifters.”

“And Donald Trump enjoys it because he’s in his element,” Kristol added.

Tapper later commented on Trump’s ability to air his grievances while members of Congress barely bat an eye.

“President Trump sends out these tweets … and there's really no response from Congress,” Tapper said. “They don't even react anymore. House Speaker Paul Ryan, Seante Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, the Democrats. It is almost like—this is not a flattering metaphor—but it is like child that you’re just used to pitching a fit so you just ignore them.”
