CNN's John Avlon meticulously breaks down how Bill Barr misled Congress

CNN's John Avlon on Thursday ran the tape of Attorney General Bill Barr's past statements to Congress to show how he had systematically misled lawmakers.

"Yesterday, the head of the Justice Department, Attorney General Bill Barr, again seemed to show he considers himself part of the Trump legal defense team," Avlon said during his "Reality Check" segment. "Time after time, Barr showed an unwillingness to confront facts unfavorable to his boss."

He then went on to document how Barr had said that he wasn't aware of how special counsel Robert Mueller viewed his summary of his final report on Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, even though Mueller had personally sent him a letter saying that his summary did not "fully capture the context, nature and substance of this Office's work and conclusions."

Additionally, Avlon said Barr was being misleading when he told one lawmaker that he didn't know anything about objections from Mueller's team about his four-page summary of their work, even though he had already received a letter from Mueller outlining those objections.

He also noted that Barr claimed that Mueller's decision to not charge President Donald Trump with a crime was not at all influenced by Department of Justice policy against charging a sitting president with a crime -- despite the fact that Mueller's own report used this policy as a justification for not charging the president with obstructing of justice.
