CNN's Toobin mocks GOP for old promise Trump would pivot to be presidential: 'It's not going to happen'

President Donald Trump is never going to be presidential, according to CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin. It's simply not going to happen.

Much like the "Mean Girls" character attempting to "make fetch happen," Republicans have been desperate for Trump to pivot into being the respectable president they've had in previous administrations. It's never going to happen, however, according to Toobin.

Fill-in host Jim Acosta noted that Trump kept talking during his answer about his son-in-law Jared Kushner and the role he and son Donald Trump Jr. played in the meeting with the Russian attorney. Typically, lawyers would advise less commentary to prevent further evidence.

"We're always editing the president," he noted. "You know what, he is who he is, and he got elected president of the United States being that way. We're long past the moment when ."

"Oh, Jeffrey, blah," waved CNN's Gloria Borger.

"Ancient history by now," Toobin laughed. "He is who he is, and he has views that are distinctive, sometimes false, but, you know, he's not going to change."

Republicans have been saying since Trump sealed the GOP nomination that the great "pivot" would occur.

"Donald Trump will come to the realization that this is a golden opportunity for leadership," Dr. Ben Carson said after the Republican convention. "I think you're probably going to see him pivoting more in the direction of everybody, rather than just those who are angry." The magical "pivot," Carson swore, would come "very shortly." It's been almost a year since then.

MSNBC's Mike Brzezinski noted the same in March.

“This is vintage Trump,” she told the panel discussing Trump's bizarre claim former President Barack Obama wiretapped him. “I’m not surprised he released two pages of his best year of his tax returns, and then set up the media. I mean, we have to look at his patterns — they are all coming to bear. He’s not pivoting or changing or stepping up in any way.”

After Trump's February speech before a joint session of Congress in which Trump managed not to attack anyone, say anything inflammatory or light the podium on fire, progressive CNN commentator Van Jones drew ire from the left for his comment that Trump became "presidential." The moment was short-lived as the momentary "pivot" turned back into his old ways.
