Connie Mack in Newtown: 'Impossible' for gun control to stop 'bad people' so don't even try

Former Republican Rep. Connie Mack (FL) traveled to Newtown, Connecticut on Monday -- exactly one month after 20 children were gunned down in the second-deadliest school shooting in U.S. history -- and insisted that Congress should not attempt gun control legislation because it was "impossible" to stop violence through new laws.

"I don't think you're ever going to stop bad people from doing bad things," Mack told CNN's Soledad O'Brien. "And we can try to legislate it away, but it's just not going to happen. They'll find other ways. Bad people who want to harm others will find a way to do it and we can continue to pass other laws, but all that does is restrict law-abiding citizens of this country's rights."

O'Brien observed that there was an analogy between gun control and traffic laws because making speeding illegal did not stop all drivers from driving too fast.

"I sort of see a similar analogy, you could create a number of laws that would help at least mitigate some of the potential for problems," she explained.

"Again, I think it's very hard to mitigate those problems when we're talking about a very small percentage of people in this country, and to create laws that are going to keep them in check when we know that there's mental health issues, it's not just the guns in this case," Mack argued. "To craft legislation that's going to box those in who we're trying to box in is very difficult. In fact, I would say it's impossible to do. Bad people will find a way to do bad things."
