Conservative pundit tells MSNBC: Trump’s anti-immigrant fervor will backfire among suburban Republicans

Conservative pundit John Podhoretz told MSNBC on Tuesday that Trump's anti-immigrant fervor wasn't doing anything to "jazz up" suburban Republican voters and would likely backfire.

Podhoretz related a conversation he'd had with suburban Republican congressman in Pennsylvania, a state which went for Trump in 2016. "In his district, where there are quite a lot of minority members and where there is social peace between the races and ethnicities," Podhoretz said, "this is really unhelpful for the Republicans."

Podhoretz added that Trump's "hard-base push" -in which the president has focused on the Central American migrant caravan, revoking birthright citizenship, and sending the U.S. military to the border- would alienate suburban Republicans.

"The districts that are going to decide control of the House of Representatives, that are Republican districts in the suburbs where voters do not like the aggressive nature of this kind of anti-immigrant hostility," Podhoretz said, citing Trump's "hard-base push", in which the president has focused on the Central American migrant caravan, revoking birthright citizenship, and sending the U.S. military to the border.

"This is a very depressing week. Pipe bombs, synagogue massacre, Trump on the warpath," he added. "Republicans need to feel jazzed and enthused and excited to go to the polls."

"This is not a way to excite the ones who are not enthusiastic."
