Conservative pundit: Trump's national emergency an affront to everything Republicans are supposed to stand for

On Tuesday, House Democrats plan to vote against a national emergency resolution declared by President Donald Trump at the Southwest border.

"The president of the United States is declaring a national emergency to honor an applause line in a rally," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on a conference call with reporters Friday.

"Not only is he disrespecting the legislative branch and the Constitution of the United States, he is dishonoring the office in which he serves," she added.

On CNN Monday, writer and CNN contributor Max Boot noted that Republicans should be joining Democrats in opposing the President's emergency declaration in droves. Yet only one Republican, U.S. Rep. Tom Reed (R-NY) has spoken out against the president's emergency declaration.

"It's shocking to me to see that only one House Republican has come out against the state of emergency, which is an affront to everything that Republicans purport to believe," Boot noted.

"They are in favor of the military and yet this is taking money away from the defense budget. They claim to be in favor of private property rights and yet this will take private property through eminent domain," he added. "And Republicans claim to be constitutional conservatives. It says right there that funds may be spent [only] if they are appropriated by Congress. This is not money that has been appropriated by Congress," Boot said.

Yet, the conservative pundit, who quit the GOP in protest of the election of Donald Trump, does not have much faith that Republicans will stand up to the president.

"Sadly I fear that they will put their loyalty to the president above their loyalty to the Constitution."
