7-Eleven is coming under fire in Australia after one of its franchises was caught on tape asking for employees to give back a portion of their wages.
Australia's ABC News reports that a secretly recorded video shows a 7-Eleven employee in Brisbane handing back a portion of her wages in cash back to her manager just after being paid.
According to ABC, this practice is "known in the industry as the 'cash back' scam" whereby "workers are paid the full award rate but have to hand back up to half their pay to the store franchisee."
The worker in the video, who is going by the pseudonym of "Anna," told ABC that her managers are telling employees that they have to give back portions of their wages because they supposedly can't afford to pay the minimum wage. She explained that they regularly tell employees that they'll need to find new jobs if they aren't willing to pay back some of the money they make.
"They say agree to paying back the money," she explains. "If not, you can go find another job. Everyone at the shop has to do."
7-Eleven says that it is investigating this practice at its franchises.
