Cyber attack exposed DNC donors and attendees' personal information: report

The person or persons who committed a cyber attack against the Democratic National Committee (DNC) came away with personal information for both high-end party donors and attendees for the party's upcoming national convention, Gawker and The Smoking Gun reported on Friday.

The information was published online by a party calling themselves "Guccifer 2.0," who also revealed what they claim is an opposition research report devoted to presumptive Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

"Guccifer may have been the first one who penetrated Hillary Clinton's and other Democrats' mail servers," the hacker said in an email to The Smoking Gun. "But he certainly wasn't the last. No wonder any other hacker could easily get access to the DNC's servers."

Both news sites reported that they received a list of names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses for Democratic donors originally compiled this past February, as well as a list of "confirmed attendees" for the convention containing their accommodation preferences during the event in Philadelphia in July.

The report runs counter to the DNC's statement earlier this week that no information of this type had been stolen.

"Guccifer 2.0" also claimed that they were able to access the information through the same methods that allowed staffers for Sen. Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign to do the same late last year.

"First I breached into mail boxes of a number of Democrats. And then using the info collected I got into Committee servers," the hacker said in an email to The Smoking Gun, adding that they sent information including financial reports and "election programs [and] strategies."
