Financial backers of Biden's primary challenger ask him to return their donations

Minnesota Democratic Rep. Dean Phillips is lacking support for his primary bid against President Joe Biden from power brokers in his state who have donated to him in the past, CNBC reported.

Phillips has reportedly been asked by some of his former financial backers to return their donations.

Phillips launched his primary run against Biden based on the belief that he cannot win reelection in 2024. According to a Morning Consult poll from last week, Phillips has only 4 percent of support among potential Democratic primary voters. The margin of error is +/- 3 percent.

“I haven’t heard from one donor that thinks this is a good idea,” Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party chairman Ken Martin said. “I don’t talk to all of his donors, but I talk to a lot of donors.”

From CNBC: "Out of the more than $10 million Phillips has raised since first running for Congress in 2018, a vast majority of contributions have come from Minnesota. During his successful 2022 reelection bid, Phillips raised around 82 percent of his more than $2 million in donations from in-state donors, with nearly $1.5 million coming from backers based in Minnesota, according to data from the nonpartisan organization OpenSecrets."
