'Everyone is welcome here' sign deemed unwelcome by school district

An Idaho school district took issue with two inclusive signs in a classroom.

According to KTVB, a middle school teacher in West Ada School District was told to remove signs under the district's "content neutrality policy."

The sign in question reads "Everyone in this room is welcome, important, accepted, respected, encouraged, valued and equal." Another said "Everyone is welcome here," with several hands raised with hearts on the palms. The hands were all different skin tones.

Sixth grade teacher Sarah Inama has taught at Clark Middle School for four years. This year, however, there were problems.

School officials told Inama the signs were "personal opinions" and given today's "political climate" it could cause a problem.

"They told me that they were in violation of district policy because in today's political environment they're considered a personal opinion," Inama told KTVB.

President Donald Trump has banned anything that relates to "diversity, equity and inclusion" in the federal government. Recently, it involved removing historic photos of a person with the last name "Gay" and a photo of the B-29 Enola Gay, the plane that dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, The Associated Press reported last week.

At first, she complied, but then replaced the signs because she believes "they represented core values of public education."

District officials then cited their internal policy, the Idaho Dignity and Nondiscrimination in Public Education Act, claiming they justify removing the signs.

Chief Academic Officer Marcus Myers emailed the network to inform them of the policy that all facilities must be "content neutral." They refused to comment further.

The school district, however, has its own posters encouraging students to "welcome others and embrace diversity."

"I just feel like as a teacher... I would do anything to protect my students. I love all of them unconditionally," she said, explaining why she doesn't want to remove the posters.
