‘Depravity is not depth’ Dan Rather blisters Trump for divisive London attack tweets

Veteran journalist Dan Rather wants the entire world to know that statements made by President Donald Trump do not represent the sentiments of most Americans.

In a new Facebook post on the London terror attacks, former CBS Evening News anchor Dan Rather said, "we must process and think carefully about how our President publicly responded," to the London attacks.

"Understandably, many people around the world viewed his remarks as insensitive and peevish, mixed with flagrant misrepresentations of facts," Rather concluded. "It is important for the world to know that his statements do not represent the sentiments and reaction of most Americans."

President Donald Trump’s tweets about this weekend’s terrorist attack in London have “enraged” government officials in the United Kingdom, “especially those who work in counterterrorism.”

Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron called for British Prime Minister Theresa May to ban Trump from the UK for attacking London Mayor Sadiq Khan during the crisis.

Dan Rather explained how Trump's tweets weren't the only self-inflicted black eye for America.

"Besides the President’s outbursts over the London attacks, the damage done by America’s withdrawal from the Paris agreement on climate change is real," he explained.

"Depravity is not depth, nor is it a strategy," Rather lectured. "Careless statements that deepen divisions are not leadership."

The long-time newsman, who was the CBS White House corespondent during Watergate, wondered aloud why Republicans keep enabling Trump to hurt America's standing in the world.

"Where are the self-described serious foreign policy minds in the GOP, the ones who often lecture the nation on the meaning of patriotism and leadership on the cable talk shows and Sunday morning public affairs programs?" Rather asked. "The arc of history may very well judge them all with the broad brush of complicity if they do not stand up now and say that this has gone too far."
