Detroit family holds slain 7-year-old girl's final birthday celebration at her funeral

A Detroit family was forced to mark their 7-year-old daughter's eighth birthday this week by bringing balloons to her funeral.

Chanell Berry, 7, was reportedly caught in the crossfire over Christmas weekend during a dispute between two women. An 8-year-old girl was also critically injured during the shooting.

Keyana Johnson told WWJ-TV that Berry was playing with her Christmas gifts when she was shot.

"Two days after Christmas they did this to my baby — she had no voice and no choice," Johnson said.

On Monday, the family brought birthday balloons and wreaths to Berry's funeral on the day that they should have been celebrating her eighth birthday.

"The bright smile, upbeat personality, just a joy, light the room up with her smile, very upbeat personality," family member Shay Carr recalled. "Just a beautiful, happy little girl."

“Justice for Chanell Berry, so that the mom, Keyana Johnson, my cousin can have closure, justice for her baby," she added.
