WATCH: Devin Nunes gets slapped down after ranting about ‘faculty lounge Marxists’ at diversity hearing
Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) was called out Wednesday during the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence hearing on diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility within the Intelligence Community.
Nunes accused the Intelligence Community of "infatuation with left-wing dogma" and complained about "seminars given to military service members focusing on the dangers of white supremacy and systemic racism."
"I'd argue that woke obsessions are the proper jurisdiction of faculty lounge Marxists, not our national security agencies," he said.
"The Intelligence Community, the military, and other national security bodies have traditionally been color-blind meritocracies, where the most capable people move up rapidly through the ranks," Nunes claimed. "The effectiveness of these organizations will unavoidably suffer when merit is devalued in favor of any other consideration."
Rep. Jim Himes (D-CT) said he wanted to return to the point of the hearing.
"Why are we here? Is this some scratching of a faculty lounge itch, as the ranking member suggests?" he asked rhetorically. "It is not. We are here because our responsibility — our duty — is to field the most competent, capable, and lethal national security team we can. A generation ago, the CIA was mocked for being, 'pale, male, Yale.'"
"Maybe you believe that an IC comprised of white males is the result of a perfectly meritocratic system. Maybe you believe that white males have some racial or ethnic or genetic advantage over others," Himes said. "If you do, there's a word for that."
