According to a report from the Fresno Bee, a radical redrawing of congressional districts will strip away whatever advantage Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) had in previous elections unless he wants to move to a newly redrawn district that is more conservative than the one he will soon be living in.
Noting that, "The new legislative maps created through redistricting — a once-a-decade task meant to better match population changes to voting districts found by the Census — are far from final and could change dramatically based on constituent feedback," the report adds that should the map now drawn up stay the same, Nunes will face re-election among voters who voted overwhelmingly for President Joe Biden.
With the cloud of his alliance with former president Donald Trump hovering over him, the Bee reports that an analyst for The Cook Political Report claimed Nunes will have his work cut out for him when, and if, he runs for the House in 2022.
According to Cook's election guru, Dave Wasserman, Nunes is one of the "five biggest losers" -- three of them Republicans-- in the California redraft with his new district flipping from a Trump +5 stronghold to a daunting Biden +9 district.
Wasserman cautioned that all is not lost for Nunes should he be willing to move, tweeting out, "A lot of Dems prematurely dancing on Rep. Devin Nunes (R)'s political grave in light of #CA22 being flipped from Trump +5 to Biden +9 seat in this draft. Reality check: Nunes could easily take his $ north to run for the Trump +10 seat anchored by Modesto."
