Don McGahn claims he had no responsibility to warn Trump of legal consequences for firing AG Jeff Sessions

On Wednesday, the release of the transcript from former White House Counsel Don McGahn's testimony to Congress revealed that he said he did not believe himself to have any legal responsibility to warn former President Donald Trump that firing then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions would create any legal problems for him.

"Sitting there in your role as White House counsel, it was your responsibility to advise the President of any potential legal consequences that could occur as a result of him asking the Attorney General to resign, correct?" one member asked him.

"I don't agree with that," said McGahn. "I don't see it as my responsibility to advise in this circumstance. I mean, it's certainly my job to be the counsel to the President, but this wasn't a situation where there is any indication that there was an opportunity to offer said advice."

Trump fired Sessions just after the 2018 midterms, following months of rockiness brought on by Sessions' refusal to interfere more directly with former special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of Russia. He was ultimately succeeded by William Barr, who did his utmost to spin and obfuscate the findings of Mueller's report.
