Appearing on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," Politico reporter Jonathan Martin noted Donald Trump has all but disappeared as House Republicans have declared war upon each other in the battle over who will be the next speaker.
Speaking with host Willie Geist, Martin noted that, while Donald Trump has boosted Rep. Jim Jordan in the past he is nowhere to be found as the Ohio Republican is struggling to round up the 217 GOP votes he needs to win.
As Martin pointed out, Trump interceding on Jordan's behalf might be enough to get him across the finish line but he is more involved with his own legal travails at the moment.
POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?
"Trump is not that interested in who's speaker of the house because it doesn't directly affect his life," Martin told the host before adding, "and Trump is effectively the leader of the party."
"I think if Trump was leaning his shoulder into this, he may be able to scare enough people to at least get Jordan close, but Trump is just not going to spend that kind of capital," he added. "That's not what he does. He's not somebody who goes to the mat for other people."
"So I think that's part of the challenge here is that Jordan can't leverage the biggest voice in the party to help, and even if he could, I'm not sure that would get him enough votes," he elaborated.
