Donald Trump receiving a target letter from Jack Smith means he's most likely to seek a meeting with the special counsel's office next, according to a prominent legal expert.
Trump will get a chance to offer his side of the story before a federal grand jury hearing evidence in connection with the special counsel’s investigation of efforts to overturn the 2020 election. But former federal prosecutor Lisa Rubin said Tuesday that if the recent past is any indication, such a meeting isn’t going to happen.
Rubin said during an appearance on MSNBC’s “All In with Chris Hayes” that recent cases suggest Trump’s lawyers don’t want the former president testifying before any grand jury.
“We understand that invitation, in fact, was in the target letter,” Rubin said.
“The invitation was, if you want to speak to the grand jury, you have until Thursday to do so. Of course, his lawyers don't want him speaking to a grand jury. They don't want him speaking to a civil jury. We know that from the E. Jean Carroll case. His lawyers are going to keep him as far away from this grand jury and potentially any other jury as far as they can.”
Instead, according to Rubin, Trump will likely seek a meeting with Smith or senior DOJ officials, "if they have not already."
"The last time around we went through a federal indictment, Trump target letter and his lawyers sat down with Jack Smith team, it wasn't until about two weeks later," she added.
