During an MSNBC "The Sunday Show" panel over where Democrats go after a tough loss in the Virginia governor's race followed by a big win on a historic infrastructure bill headed for President Joe Biden's signature, the former GOP Communications Director commented on where the GOP has gone since she abandoned the party due to Donald Trump.
Speaking with host Jonathan Capehart, Tara Setmayer -- who is now a part of the Lincoln Project -- claimed the Republican Party has taken a turn for the worse even though Trump lost almost 11 months ago.
After watching a clip of Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) talking about Donald Trump's support within the party on Fox News Sunday morning, host Capehart asked Setmayer for comment after Cheney told Fox host Chris Wallace, "I think the only way the Republican Party can go forward in strength is if we reject the lie. If we reject what happened on January 6th. If we reject the efforts that President Trump made, frankly, to steal the election."
"So, Tara,' Capehart prompted. "Will the Republican Party actually do what she says? Because I have no faith that it will."
"No, absolutely not," the former GOP official shot back. "We've seen their behavior. The Republican Party's worse now than it was a year ago when I decided to leave it. That's all you need to know."
"They're still backing a candidate who thinks that January 6th was a patriotic act, not a violent insurrection to overthrow the government and still Republicans are running on this big lie," she continued. "As you mention in your show, seven people who attended January 6th won offices. 57 more are running for re-election next year. The Republican Party has not repudiated this, they have empowered it. They say those who make you believe absurdities make you commit atrocities. That's what the Republican Party apparatus is continuing to do and, God bless Liz Cheney, but good luck with that."
