Elijah Cummings hammers Chaffetz over his plans to hound Clinton over emails

Less then 24 hours after GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump was swept into office, House Oversight and Government Reform Committee chair Jason Chaffetz said he intends to continue to hound former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton over her missing emails.

The announcement by the Republican was greeted with disdain by fellow committee member Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings  saying America deserves better.

In an interview with the Washington Post, the Utah Republican said, "It would be totally remiss of us to dismiss” the investigation despite the fact that Clinton did not win the election.

“I still have a duty and obligation“ to get to the truth about one of the largest breaches of security at the State Department," he claimed. "Tens of thousands of documents still have not been turned over to Congress.”

In a statement, Cummings fired back at both the announcement and the timing.

"It is extremely disappointing that Chairman Chaffetz plans to continue investigating Secretary Clinton for years to come," he said. "After everything our country has just been through — and particularly given that Donald Trump and Paul Ryan have both called for healing our nation’s divisions — I think the American people deserve more from Congress than to continue squandering taxpayer dollars on these baseless Republican accusations and partisan attacks."
