Ellen Page fights back tears describing the hateful 'poison' that led up to the Orlando shooting

Ellen Page was heartbroken when talking about the Orlando massacre during filming for Chelsea Handler's new Netflix talk show.

"The reality is that violence towards LGBT people is...this is a common thing," said Page, who came out as a lesbian in 2014. "Hate crimes towards LGBT people, extremely anti-gay, anti-bi, anti-trans rhetoric is constantly creating a poisonous environment. Which leads to people hating themselves, it leads to people being violent towards one and other, to bullying, to abuse and it really needs to stop."

Page remarked that especially after the shooting this weekend at an LGBT nightclub, “It really needs to stop because...people are really, really struggling and they deserve to live freely, love freely and not be afraid.”

With the new season of her VICELAND show "Gaycation," a show that explores LGBTQ cultures around the world, Page said she was grateful that she can share the experience with her best friend. “I’m so grateful to people around the world that face so much difficulty and struggle, and are willing to share their stories with us,” she said.

Handler's other guests included "Brady Bunch" mom, Florence Henderson, as the group discussed their opposition to assault weapons.

“Whether you believe in guns or not, whatever we’re doing isn’t working so we all have to have the conversation and continue to have the conversation on how to fix this country and what we can do,” Handler said.

"They should be banned," Henderson said.
