In an interview published Wednesday with the New York Post, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) revealed that Elon Musk changed his phone number following the Tesla CEO’s messy fallout with President Donald Trump.
“I’ve reached out to Elon multiple times (since the blowup), I wanted he and the president to mend it up, and frankly, I think the president was of that mind as well, but there’s some tension there,” Johnson said.
“I sent him a long text message, and his number changed; after the blow-up, something happened. So I got the number later and realized I was sending it out into the ether somewhere, he never read it.”
Musk had been a strong supporter of Trump’s bid to return to the White House, having contributed nearly $300 million to Trump’s 2024 campaign. In Return, Trump selected Musk to lead the newly-established Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, a new task force of sorts charged with identifying wasteful spending.
The two billionaire’s close relationship was short lived, however, breaking down largely over the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, the budget reconciliation package that Musk accused of being a “disgusting abomination” due to its impact on the federal deficit, projected to add as much as $4.1 trillion to the national debt over ten years.
That spat included fierce back-and-forth comments between the two. Musk accused Trump of being compromised by the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, alleged to have operated a blackmail operation on power individuals, and Trump threatened to have Musk deported to South Africa.
Nevertheless, Johnson said he still maintains hope that the two will reconcile, and said he still had plans to meet with the tech billionaire in the near future.
“So I look forward to meeting him in person,” Johnson said. “We’ve got to make it right, I have nothing against Elon, obviously, I have great respect for what he’s done. I just want him to fully understand what we’re doing and remind him of the strategy; this is a long-term play, we can’t fix this stuff overnight, but we have a plan to do it.”
