New York City mayor Eric Adams has been accused of sexual assault in a newly revealed legal filing, reported the New York Post.
"The accuser, whom The Post is not identifying because of the nature of the allegation, named the former cop as a defendant along with the NYPD’s transit bureau and Guardian Association in a lawsuit filed late Wednesday," reported Snejana Farberov. "'Plaintiff was sexually assaulted by Defendant Eric Adams in New York, New York in 1993 while they both worked for the City of New York,' alleges the 3-page summons, which does not give more detail." Adams is a veteran of the New York Police Department.
The suit was filed under the New York Adult Survivors Act, a soon-expiring law that created a window for individuals whose sexual assault allegations fall outside the statute of limitations to file claims from decades ago.
The law has been used to accuse a number of public figures of sexual assault, from former president Donald Trump, to musician and entrepreneur Sean "Diddy" Combs and Guns N' Roses frontman Axl Rose.
A city hall spokesperson said of the allegation, “The mayor does not know who this person is. If they ever met, he doesn’t recall it.”
But this is not the only legal problem the mayor is facing. Reports earlier this month revealed that a federal investigation is probing whether Adams received illegal political donations from the nation of Turkey, although Adams denies any wrongdoing and an attorney for the mayor's office says there is currently no indication Adams himself is a criminal target of that investigation.
