Trump ally Steve Bannon is now hyping the effort to oust Mitch McConnell

Supporters of former President Donald Trump are growing increasingly frustrated with Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) refusing to take strategic advice from the former president.

It started with the Bipartisan Infrastructure Framework in August.

"Joe Biden's infrastructure bill will be used against the Republican Party in the upcoming elections in 2022 and 2024. It will be very hard for me to endorse anyone foolish enough to vote in favor of this deal," Trump threatened in an emailed statement.

Despite the political threat, McConnell was among the 19 GOP senators who voted for the bill. Trump was outraged.

"Nobody will ever understand why Mitch McConnell allowed this non-infrastructure bill to be passed. He has given up all of his leverage for the big whopper of a bill that will follow. I have quietly said for years that Mitch McConnell is the most overrated man in politics—now I don't have to be quiet anymore," Trump said in a statement following the vote.

Trump and McConnell both split again on the debt ceiling.

"Republican Senators, do not vote for this terrible deal being pushed by folding Mitch McConnell. Stand strong for our Country," Trump urged in a statement.

Yet McConnell was among the 11 Republican senators who crossed the aisle to allow Democrats to raise the debt limit.

On Tuesday, Steve Bannon praised disgraced former Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens for vowing to oust McConnell as GOP leader if elected to the US Senate.

"And we see the gutlessness and cowardice of the Republican establishment in backing down and giving them more time to come up with a budget and giving them relief on the debt ceiling — we could've shut this whole thing down last week. The four no's: no on the infrastructure bill, no on the $3.5 trillion, no on the continuing resolution and no on the debt ceiling," he said.

"And there's one person right now running for the U.S. Senate that's stepped up and said, 'You know what? As a condition to my candidacy, when I win the primary and then when I win the general and I'm a United States senator, I'm voting for Mitch McConnell to be leader, this has got to stop.' That's courage," Bannon said.

"This is a defining moment. That's what Donald Trump did more than anything else, what Donald Trump did was gave courage. And Greitens in the direct lineage to that," Bannon said.

Bannon's comments follow Trump's attacks on McConnell at a campaign rally in Iowa on Saturday.
