'Ex-gay' group puts up Virginia billboard claiming twin studies 'prove' that 'nobody is born gay'
The Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays & Gays (PFOX) erected a billboard in Virginia asserting that twin studies prove that "nobody is born gay," WWBT reports.
The billboard features what appear to be two men -- one in a suit, the other in a T-shirt -- sandwiching the words, "IDENTICAL TWINS: ONE GAY. ONE NOT. NOBODY IS BORN GAY."
In a statement explaining the reasoning behind the billboard, PFOX's Executive Director, Regina Griggs, wrote that "[i]dentical twins have the same genes or DNA. They are nurtured in equal prenatal conditions. If homosexuality is caused by genetics or prenatal conditions and one twin is gay, the co-twin should also be gay…Because identical twins are always genetically identical, homosexuality cannot be genetically dictated. No one is born gay."
The organization strongly promotes ex-gay therapy, even though the American Psychological Association has declared that such practices are based on the belief that homosexuality is a mental health issue.
According to the group's website, "PFOX was created specifically to be an alternative to the misinformed gay family groups which insist that parents can only prove their love for their gay child if they support gay rights and affirm their child’s self-proclaimed gay identity."
Moreover, the organization "has a long and proud history of educating society on the facts about sexual orientation in order to eliminate negative perceptions and discrimination against ex-gays," their website continues.
The site also links to the blog of Stephen Black, who argues that "with the actual current research of all the studies, the verdict is in: the 'gay gene' is nothing but a myth."
