Ex-South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford to run for Congress

Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford (R) will formally announce his plan to run for Congress on Wednesday.

"What I’d like to do is take all that I’ve learned in my time in Congress and my governorship, on my way up and on my way down, and apply it to what is probably the most important debate that we will have in regard to the future of our country. I’m running because I care deeply about spending, and the mathematical impossibility of us continuing down the path we’re on," Sanford told the National Review.

Besides his long political career, Sanford is best known for his extramarital affair, which unintentionally received national attention.

Sanford mysteriously disappeared in 2009. When the press inquired into his whereabouts, his staff said he was hiking on the Appalachian trail and could not be reached. Due to his long absence, many worried that the governor had gone missing.

The press eventually learned he was in Argentina with his mistress, and he admitted to the affair upon returning to the United States.

"In life we’re all going to make mistakes, we’re all going to come up short. The key is, how do you get back up and how do you learn from those mistakes?" he told the National Review.
