Ex-White House official turns on Barr after 'giving him the benefit of the doubt': He's 'in Trump's pocket'

On Friday, David Gergen flipped on Attorney General Bill Barr for protecting President Donald Trump.

Gergen, is a CNN political commentator, and he also served as a presidential adviser for Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, and Bill Clinton. He noted that Trump has Barr "in his pocket."

Barr gave his first interview since becoming attorney general to Fox News anchor Bill Hemmer. During the interview, Barr talked about his commitment to investigate the origins of the Trump-Russia probe.

"Barr is now also parroting the president when it comes to the word 'spying,' which is what the president used to describe what happened to his campaign," CNN host Erin Burnett said. "David, why is Barr kowtowing to Trump on this?"

Gergen explained that Barr acts like Trump's personal attorney, and not the attorney general for the country.

"He presented himself to the Congress and he basically made a pledge that he would be an independent attorney general. That he would be the nation’s top attorney. What he has done over the last few weeks, is become the president’s top attorney," Gergen explained.

Adding, "He is acting as if he is in the president’s pocket. He has become the No.1 defender of the president. And to go on Fox News and give what can only be construed as a very partisan tangent and leaning interview about all of this is deeply distressing."

"I was among those saying we should give him the benefit of the doubt. I can’t understand why he would let his legacy crumble," Gergen said.
