‘Shoot the messenger’: CNN reporter explains how Facebook is taking a page from Trump’s playbook by gaslighting America

Facebook is utilizing the Donald Trump playbook of attacking the media to deflect from accusations of misconduct, a CNN correspondent explained on Tuesday.

"It is the biggest crisis in Facebook's 17-year history," CNN's John Berman reported. "Tens of thousands of pages of damning revelations leaked by whistleblower Frances Haugen, showing how Facebook profits off false information and relies on an algorithm that pushes fake news. Among the revelations that CNN uncovered so far, Facebook misled the public about extremism linked to the 2020 election and insurrection, allowed the algorithm to promote Qanon conspiracy theories."

"Now, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is striking a defensive tone. He is blaming the media during his company's quarterly earnings call on Monday," he said, playing an audio clip of the billionaire.

Berman tried to explain Zuckerberg's position.

"It reminds me, in a way, of spoiled food, right? Like a worm in the food. It's someone saying, 'Oh, but they're focused on the worm, not the food.' Well, the food is spoiled," Berman noted.

"I think he is taking a page out of the Trump playbook there, right?" CNN's Donie O'Sullivan said.

"I think that is becoming the Facebook strategy, go after the media now, shoot the messenger," he explained.
