Family of 10-year-old Black girl who committed suicide says school district ignored repeated warnings of racist bullying

The family and community members of a 10-year-old Black girl who died by suicide are demanding accountability from the girl's Utah school district after they say their warnings about bullying were repeatedly ignored, the Salt Lake Tribune reports.
The girl's mom, Brittany Tichenor-Cox, says she had informed the Davis School District several times about how her daughter, Isabella, was being treated by both classmates and her teacher. Tichenor-Cox says her daughter's abuse for being Black and autistic was allowed to continue without intervention.
"Even though my baby is gone, I'm going to make sure I stand for Izzy," Tichenor-Cox said, sobbing. "I will never get to see her again … I will never … She was 10 years old. She was only 10."
Isabella's death comes after the U.S. Department of Justice issued a scathing report into Davis School District's serious mishandling of reports of racism.
In a statement this Monday, the district issued a statement saying it was working "extensively with the family" to resolve the case and "will continue to provide help to them and others impacted by this tragedy."
"We, like everyone, are devastated by the death of this child," the district said. "We take all incidents and reports of bullying seriously. At this point, the incident we are aware of involved another student. The teacher and administration responded quickly and appropriately. As with all allegations of bullying, our investigation will continue."
