Fani Willis' faced 'tough questions' from Trump grand jury about jail conditions: Report
November 10, 2023
The grand jury empaneled by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis to investigate former President Donald Trump's alleged election racketeering scheme in Georgia asked "tough questions" about the conditions in the county jail, and got strong pushback from prosecutors, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Friday.
The grand jury had a disagreement with Willis’ office over the panel’s legal authority to subpoena jail records, according to a 16-page report obtained by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
The August report suggests grand jurors wanted to compel Fulton County sheriff Patrick Labat to provide records on inmate deaths in the facility, but were told by Willis' office it did not have the power to issue the law enforcement officer a subpoena.
Ultimately, former President Donald Trump and more than a dozen of his allies were processed through the facility, which has come under criticism for inmate deaths, including one man whose dead body was found with "bite marks" and other signs of apparent abuse.
Most co-defendants were released immediately after booking except for Harrison Floyd, the former director of Black Voices for Trump, who was allegedly involved with the scheme to intimidate poll workers, and who actually spent almost a week held in the facility because of issues with securing bond.
