'Did somebody lie?' Legal expert says if Fani Willis misled in court filings 'it's over'

During a roundtable discussion on MSNBC Thursday, attorney and legal commentator Andrew Weissmann discussed the Georgia court hearing that's examining the relationship between Fulton County D.A. Fani Willis and the lead prosecutor in her election interference case against Donald Trump.

Weissmann said that going into the hearing, Willis' legal team argued that her romantic relationship with lead prosecutor Nathan Wade is an "apples and oranges" issue when it came to the merits of the case. But the "real issue" for the judge was whether Willis was financially profiting from her relationship with Wade in the form of gifts he gave her that were paid for by his taxpayer-funded salary.

"I think the main issue now is, did somebody lie?" Weissmann said.

"If they find that Mr. Wade lied and that Fani Willis submitted a knowingly false affidavit, I agree, it's over," Weissmann later said.

Willis claimed in court filings that her relationship with Wade began after she hired him to be the lead prosecutor in the case, and it has no bearing on the criminal case. But Trump co-defendant Michael Roman claims the defense can prove that their relationship began long before Wade was hired.

Willis tried to have the hearing canceled, but Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee on Monday rejected her request "because I think it's possible that the facts alleged by the defendant could result in disqualification."
